IM & Play Therapy
What is Interactive Metronome Therapy?
Interactive Metronone (IM) is research based training that helps children and
adults overcome attention, memory and coordination limitations.
It is a therapy that has many applications and can potentially help individuals of
any age with mental and physical disabilities. Positive outcomes in focus,
attention, speech, language, reading coordination, gait and balance.
IM can help children with ADHD improve impulse control or aid sensory
integration in children with autism. IM is often used by occupational therapists,
but also by speech and language pathologist, physical therapists, physicians,
IM is a neuro-motor therapy tool that involves game-like auditory and visual
stimuli as well as movement exercises. The exercise involves a client standing in
front of a computer screen with a headset/speaker and a handset that has a
trigger, and a foot mat with a trigger that the computer tracks how accurate the
hand clapping and foot tapping match the sounds of metronome. Other
movements involve moving the hands or feet to repetitive sounds at a steady
rhythm, similar to that of a musical metronome.
What is Play Therapy?
Play is an activity which is usually in an environment with very little rules
or none at all. This allows the child specially to feel free to express and
move around the environment with ease. Usually the Play session room is
set up with specific materials to allow creativity and expression to take
place. At The Discovery Clinic, our Play Therapy room is arrange with well
throughout Montessori based materials that allows each child to tweak their
curiosity in various areas both in practical life activities and academics
manipulatives to enhance the learning experience. We encourage painting,
drawing, clay molding and various forms of art activities to promote positive
The environment is created to stimulate the brain to have hands on
experience with many different areas which includes sand, rice, beans and
water play for those with sensory issues. It is when the child is at a comfort
level of play, learning takes place. Feeling secure in the environment is crucial in forming trust with the therapist in order for “learning to take place”. As children’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play, it becomes an important vehicle for them to know and accept themselves as well as others.
“You can discover more about a person in one hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato
